Parrot Information

Aviaries:

All of our parrot aviaries are of a conventional style with a suspended porch on the front. The aviaries vary in size:

Large size aviaries for Amazons, Macaws, Greys and Derbyans

6m x 1.2m with suspended part 2m x 1.2m

Small aviaries for Conures, Moustache, and Princess are

2.5m x 1m with 1.5m x 1m porch

All aviaries are 7ft high.

All types of accessories are provided for the birds to encourage activity and stimulus eg. toys, chains, swings etc.

Breeding boxes are kept all year round due to different breeding times.

Diet:

All parrots are fed seed on a daily basis and each day we offer a variety of nuts, fresh fruit, vegetables, dried fruits and occasionally pellets.

During the colder months the birds are all given pellets for a change of diet and remove excess weight.

Incubation:

At Mass Birds we use 2 type of incubators, Grumbach and Kimani. Both are equally as good. The Kimani incubator is Australian made and 1/3 of the price of the Grumbach and is worth a look.

Hand Rearing:

We hand rear approx half of our young parrots. We have 2 types of hand reared parrots.

Type 1:

The young parrot is raised to go back into the breeding aviary. Handling is kept to a minimum. At the pin feather stage all birds are kept in a colony environment (to help stop any imprinting of youngsters). These birds are hand reared out in our bird room within our breeding complex. At weening stage birds are often placed out in our walkways for interaction with adult species.

Type 2:

The young parrot is handled and played with on a regular basis with basic human education – comfortable with being handled, on shoulder etc.

Type 2 hand raised parrots must be pre ordered.
